I have recently discovered you can recycle your unrecyclable biscuit wrappers!!
I was checking to see if I could recycle my Jaffa Cakes packet and stumbled across a Cracker and Biscuit Wrappers Recycling Programme. It turns out McVities and TerraCycle have teamed up to recycle their packaging. The programme takes this previously unrecyclable biscuit wrappers and recycles it into plastic pellets. This material can then be used to make other products.
The process:
- Collect your biscuit wrappers
- Once you have collected your wrappers, you can then drop it off at a variety of drop off points or become a drop off point yourself.
- Receive points to award to the charity of your choice.
The programme accepts the following waste:

The website also has a series of promotional material. You can use this around your work place or community to encourage recycling.
I started a biscuit wrapper collection box at my work place. Hopefully I will have my first box to send to TerraCyle in no time.
This sustainability action requires a medium amount of effort.
Check out which plastics you can recycle in your local collection.

Recently larger supermarkets like Sainsburys, Co-op and Tescos have started taking flexible plastic. Some retailers like Sainsburys also include sweet wrappers like the Oreo wrappers: https://www.about.sainsburys.co.uk/sustainability/plan-for-better/our-stories/2021/flexible-plastics

Can put the empty biscuit rappers in any recycle bag for the council rubbish collection to take away

Unfortunately council collections don’t take biscuit wrappers.
