Recycling is a confusing world so I have created a page of the most common frequently asked questions about recycling and what can and cannot be recycled.

Can you recycle black plastic?

Depends, black plastic can be recycled, however not all Local Authorities take black plastic as it has a much lower resale value than other types of plastic, so I would check with your Local Authority.

Can you recycle egg boxes?

Yes, most Local Authorities take the cardboard egg cartons. These can also be composted or even used as seed starters.

Can you recycle aerosol cans?

Yes, providing the contents is used up, aerosol cans can be recycled in your kerbside recycling.

Can you recycle plastic film?

Depends, non-crunchy plastic film ie -plastic bags and bread bags can be recycled. Some Local Authorities collect it and supermarkets collect it. The crunchy plastic film found on food packaging i.e prepared salads and film lids off fruit, cannot be recycled.

Why can’t I recycle my food waste with my green waste?

You cannot recycle your food waste with your green waste because they both undergo different processes to recycle them. Food waste often goes to a biodigester to create biogas. The green waste often gets composted and sold at your local household waste site as compost.

Can you recycle Aluminium foil?

Yes, as long as the foil is clean, Local Authorities can recycle your aluminium foil in the kerbside collection.
